Since the beginning, having foreign players in IPL teams has been a big deal, changing how the tournament works. Since the first edition, numerous foreign players have registered for the IPL auction season by season. They are a vital part of the league’s success.

Squad and Team Formation
As per the IPL committee regulations, a franchise can have a squad of 25 players, 8 of whom can be foreigners at most. The narrow margin often forces teams to scout for quality foreign players in their group. Besides the 4 overseas players, the other 7 in the 11 will be local choice picks.
In no way can more than four international players be played by a team on the field during an IPL match. If one of the foreign players needs to be substituted, only a replacement foreign player can take his place on the field. A maximum of 4 substitute fielders are permitted at a time.

Is it Possible to Have Less Than Four Overseas Players on a Team?
Yes! Though it is a rare event, sometimes teams have played an IPL match with fewer than 4 foreign players. The first occurrence was in the first season when Rajasthan Royals opted for only three overseas players against Kings XI Punjab.
In 2010, Mumbai Indians played a match against Rajasthan Royals with only three foreign players. In 2011, Kolkata Knight Riders took this concept even further, playing only two foreign players against Chennai Super Kings.
Has an IPL Match Ever Had More Than Four Foreign Players?
No! For 16 years of IPL’s, no more than 4 foreign players have ever been allowed. Yet, during the Champions League T20 in 2011, Mumbai Indians were permitted to play 5 overseas players as many Indian players were injured. Hardik Pandya currently captains the Mumbai Indians unit and has crashed out of the current edition of TATA IPL.
What is the Present Status of More Than 4 Foreign Players in the IPL?
Though franchises are okay to have just 4 foreigners in their teams for now, there are rumblings that franchise bosses want to change this rule. There were also rumours that after IPL 2021, 10 teams would be part of the competition, which came true with the introduction of Gujrat Titans and Lucknow SuperGiants. An official of the BCCI was quoted on a website saying that an extra overseas player would make teams more even.
