The Indian Premier League (IPL), when it started in 2008, was a one-of-a kind tournament.

No one in India had seen such a tournament, which was based on the European Football Leagues where each team played another on a home-and-away basis. On a home-and-away basis, it becomes mandatory to have a home of your own.

In 2008, there were eight teams which means there were a number of home grounds. As the number of franchises increased in 2010, the number of home grounds also increased.

As of now, we have a ten-team IPL which means we have ten home stadiums. In this article, we take a look at each of the home grounds and see how the pitch has behaved.

What Are the Home Grounds of Ten IPL Franchisees:

Take a look at this table which gives you a good idea of the home grounds of the ten franchisees:

Wankhede Stadium:

Home to one of the most successful teams in IPL, Wankhede Stadium hosted its first IPL game in 2008 when the Mumbai Indians took on Chennai Super Kings.

With a capacity of 33,018, Wankhede saw a few big games in its lifetime.

This includes India’s World Cup win in 2011 where India beat Sri Lanka to register their second ODI World Cup trophy.

The pitch at Wankhede has always been favorable to the batters, and it becomes slow as the game progresses.

Mumbai Indians will play at least seven games here this season.

MA Chidambaram Stadium:

Home to the Chennai Super Kings, MA Chidambaram Stadium will host seven games in the 2024 IPL.

The pitch here has been on the slower side and offers a great deal of turn.

Once you bat first here and post a 180-plus total, there is a high chance that you will come out winning.

The stadium hosted the thrilling 2012 IPL final where the Kolkata Knight Riders beat the home team.

It has a capacity of 50,000.

Eden Gardens:

One of the most iconic venues across the country, the Eden Gardens is one of the oldest stadiums.

Built in 1864, Eden Gardens has a capacity of 66,000.

It is home to KKR and will host seven games in the 2024 season as well.

The pitch is on the slower side, and batting second becomes somewhat difficult here.

 Arun Jaitley Stadium:

Established in 1882, Arun Jaitley Stadium was once known as the Feroz Shah Kotla.

It has a capacity of 35,200 and served as the home ground for Delhi Daredevils which is now renamed Delhi Capitals since the new franchise took over in 2019.

The stadium will host seven home games in 2024 IPL, and the home team must strategize depending on the kind of pitch that is usually on offer: Slow and low.

Narendra Modi Stadium:

One of the largest stadiums in the world, the Narendra Modi Stadium can host as much as 1,32,000 people.

It will serve as a home ground for the Gujarat Titans who lifted the trophy in their very first season in 2022.

The track here is a pure batting track where scores in excess of 180 can be chased down.

In the 2024 IPL, the venue will host seven home games.

The stadium was completed on February 24, 2020, and would see its first international match a year later when England toured India.

M Chinnaswamy Stadium:

Located in Bengaluru, Chinnaswamy Stadium is a batting paradise.

It has small dimensions and a fast outfield which ensures that an excess of 200 can be chased down here.

The stadium will host seven home games.

Established in 1969, it has a seating capacity of 33,800.

PCA Stadium:

Located in the city of Mohali, PCA Stadium is a pure batter’s paradise.

Here, the chasing team can chase down more than 180-plus with ease.

Now known as the IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali was established in 1993 and has a seating capacity of 27,000.

The ground serves as a home ground for the Punjab Kings and will host seven home games in the upcoming 2024 IPL.

Sawai Mansingh Stadium:

Located in Jaipur, the Sawai Mansingh Stadium has a seating capacity of 30,000.

It was established in 1969 and served as a home stadium for the Rajasthan Royals.

The pitch here is good for batters, but in the last IPL season, the wicket appeared slow, and chasing teams often struggled to get going.

In the upcoming season, the stadium is expected to host at least five matches, provided that RR doesn’t have a second home which has been the norm in past few years.

Rajiv Gandhi Stadium:

Established in 2003, this stadium is located on the outskirts of the city of Hyderabad.

It has served as the home ground for the Hyderabad franchise since the inaugural IPL. From 2008 to 2012, it was the home team for the Deccan Chargers.

From 2013 onwards, it was Sunrisers Hyderabad who had been hosted here.

The pitch is good for batters, and hence anything more than 180 can be chased down. However, if the score crosses the 200-run mark, it will be difficult to chase.

Ekana Stadium:

Located in Lucknow, the stadium was built in 2017 and has since hosted several international matches.

However, Lucknow got its opportunity to host its first-ever IPL match in 2022 when the Lucknow Super Giants were formed.

The pitch is a rank-turner, and it becomes difficult to chase down totals.

In the upcoming season, it will host at least seven games for the home team: Lucknow Super Giants.

 Final Thoughts:

Those are the above-mentioned home grounds where action will return in the 2024 IPL.

Do remember that with the home-and-away format, home stadiums play a crucial role in driving home the advantage that teams usually look for.

A franchise can specifically ask for a particular pitch which might help them win and hence help them garner valuable points.

Star it if you find it helpful.
